Is it time to redesign your website?
Written by katie test davis
The average lifespan of a website is 2 years and 7 months, according to OrbitMedia.
Which probably makes you wonder…When was the last time you updated your organization’s website?
My guess is that it’s been longer than 2 years.
Is it time for a website update or redesign? Maybe.
Here’s how to tell.
have you updated your mission, vision or added new programs?
If your nonprofit released a new Strategic Action Plan, launched new programs or shifted its focus, your website should clearly reflect those changes!
Think of your site as your digital welcome mat — it’s where supporters and clients go to get to know you. Your site should reflect what you’re doing now so you can gain and maintain their trust, as well as their attention
Don’t let an outdated site trip you up or risk losing credibility among your most important audiences.
2. have you adjusted to our current advocacy conditions or new client demands?
The world is moving fast, and your website should keep up.
Whether you’re tackling new advocacy priorities or responding to what your audience needs right now, your site should feel fresh and relevant. If your latest blog was published during the COVID-19 pandemic, it’s time to hit the refresh button.
Short on time and got a lot of evergreen content? At the very least, consider removing dates from old blogs.
An outdated website can make your nonprofit seem out of touch — and nobody wants that.
3. Does your website keep pace with your peers?
Take a peek at your competitors’ websites. Are they sleek, modern and engaging? If so, it’s time to level up!
Your website is often the first impression people have of your nonprofit, so don’t let it look like a relic from the past. An updated website with a smooth user experience or easy-to-access resources, for example, can help position you as a leader amongst your peers.
Remember: A polished, professional site can help you attract donors, funders and supporters — and show the world your work is making a big difference for children and families.
One example we love? John Rex Endowment’s video header!
4. is your website mobile-friendly and searchable?
Year after year, data tells us that most people are checking out your site on their phones. Making your site mobile-friendly can help you gain the attention of a huge chunk of traffic.
An easy-to-find site also helps you reach your engagement goals. If your site doesn’t show up in search results (or AI recommendations), how will people find you?
A site that’s hard to navigate or invisible online is a clear sign it’s time for a redesign.
At Forthright Advising, we know how important it is for nonprofits to have a website that works as hard as they do. A fresh, user-friendly site can help you connect with your audience, share your mission, and make a bigger impact.
